Umbilical Cord Banking, and Cord Blood Banking | CryoSave India
Umbilical cord stem cells

Owing to their unique abilities, stem cells play a very important role during the development of baby in the mother’s womb. These unique abilities also make stem cells very important and powerful for medical therapies. A reserve of these cells is left behind in the umbilical cord and can be collected for potential future use, this is the reason more and more parents are now choosing to bank their children’s stem cells.

Today, therapeutically usable sources of stem cells include Umbilical Cord Blood, Bone Marrow & Peripheral Blood and this is how these sources compare:

Criteria Umbilical Cord Blood Bone Marrow & Peripheral Blood
Less restricted with regards to HLA matching thus increasing the chances for use in treatment for individuals other than the baby⁷.

More restricted with regards to HLA matching thus limiting the chances of use in treatment.
Available as and when needed for use⁶.

Availability depends on finding a matching donor and willingness of the donor to donate.
Collection related Pain
Collection of Umbilical Cord and Cord Blood is done immediately after the delivery and is risk-free and painless for both the mother and the baby⁶.

Bone marrow collection is an invasive and painful procedure. Peripheral blood stem cell collection is somewhat invasive and involves administering growth factors to the individual donating (long term effects of these growth factors on individuals is not known).
Transplantable stem cells
Umbilical cord blood contains a higher frequency of stem cells that can be used for treatment⁵.

Bone marrow and peripheral blood contain relatively lower frequency of stem cells that can be used for treatment.
Multiplication potential
The potential of stem cells to multiply/ proliferate is almost up to eight times higher than cells from bone marrow⁵.

The potential of stem cells to multiply/ proliferate is relatively lower.
Engraftment time
Cells from cord blood take more time relatively to engraft⁵.

Cells from bone marrow/ peripheral blood take less time relatively to en-graft.
Treatment related complications
Treatment related complications like GvHD are less frequent and less severe. Latent viral infections are rare⁶.

Treatment related complications like GvHD are more frequent and severe as are latent viral infections.
Age related advantage
Stem cells from cord blood have the advantage of being young, naïve and fresh 5 & 6.

Stem cells from bone marrow and peripheral blood have the disadvantage of being relatively older.

Stem cells in their best shape can be found in the umbilical cord. Compared to other therapeutically usable sources of stem cells, stem cells from umbilical cord have greater ability to multiply (reportedly up to 8 fold more than bone marrow) and potential to trans-differentiate into various tissue types ⁵.

CryoSave has developed the technology to preserve the cord blood and cord tissue with the purpose of using this rich source of stem cells in medical therapy.

Stem Cells from Umbilical Cord are

Internal makeup preservation

Easily Found

Umbilical cord stem cells are found in umbilical cord, if you do not opt for stem cell preservation, your umbilical cord is discarded as biomedical waste

Stem cell collection

Easily Collected

Collection of umbilical cord and cord blood happens immediately after the clamping and thus is painless and risk-free for both mother and baby ⁶.

Stem cell storage

Easily Stored

Stem cells can be easily cryo-preserved at temperatures below -150°C (to prevent aging and damage caused due to time) until needed ⁸.
